4 ChatGPT Prompts To Identify High-Income Skills In 2026

The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025 estimates that 92 million roles will be displaced by 2030, while 170 million new ones will be created. Nearly 40% of the skills required on the job today are expected to change. ChatGPT cannot fix a structural shift in the labor market. But used with intention, it can help individuals cut through the noise and figure out which skills are actually worth building.

The following four ChatGPT prompts are designed to help solve that specific problem.

ChatGPT Prompt 1: Uncover The High-Income Skills You Already Have

Skills that generate income are often embedded in everyday experience — how someone communicates under pressure, organizes complex information, or manages people in uncertain situations. The WEF’s 2026 report identifies analytical thinking as the most sought-after core skill among employers, with seven out of 10 companies calling it essential. Creative thinking, resilience and leadership are close behind. These are not niche technical competencies. They are things many professionals have been practicing for years without naming them.

Prompt: “Here are several experiences from my work, school, or extracurricular activities [paste details]. Based on these, which of my existing skills could be considered high-income skills? Explain why each has earning potential in today’s market.”

Specific experiences, such as a project that went well or a problem you solved that others found difficult, will produce something helpful.

ChatGPT Prompt 2: Find Out Which Skills The Market Actually Wants

Not all skills are valued equally right now. Some are in genuine demand because they solve urgent business problems. Others are widely available, which limits what employers or clients are willing to pay for them.

The WEF report is direct on this point: AI and big data, networks and cybersecurity, and technological literacy are projected to see the steepest growth in demand through 2030. Investment in AI has grown eightfold since ChatGPT launched in November 2022, according to the report. At the same time, demand is declining for repetitive clerical tasks, manual data processing, and roles that require little digital interaction.

Knowing this matters before deciding where to invest time.

Prompt: “List the most in-demand high-income skills in 2026 and explain why businesses are paying for them. Then tell me which of these skills [list your own] I am best positioned to develop, based on what I’ve already described.”

This prompt is designed to identify the intersection between market demand and an individual’s relevant skills. It’s important to acknowledge one key limitation: ChatGPT’s knowledge is not always up to date. For industry- or market-specific skills, check current job postings or connect with professionals in those fields for the most accurate, up-to-date information.

ChatGPT Prompt 3: Connect Your Skills To Real Income Opportunities

Many people can name their strengths, but cannot picture how those strengths translate into money. That gap is not a motivation problem. It is usually an information problem.

Prompt: “Based on these skills [list them], identify specific income opportunities available in 2026. Include examples of how people are currently generating income using each skill — through freelance work, services, employment, or other channels.”

The 2025 WEF report notes that 86% of employers expect AI and big data to drive major transformation in their businesses. But analytical thinking, communication, and leadership — human skills that cannot be automated — remain foundational across nearly every growing sector. The income opportunities tied to those skills are real and, in many cases, accessible without years of additional training.

ChatGPT Prompt 4: Build A 30-Day Plan Around One Skill

This is where most people stop. They finish the reflection, feel good about what they found, and then nothing changes.

The problem is usually the scope. Trying to build three skills simultaneously isn’t a great strategy. One skill, built with consistency over 30 days, produces valuable information and results.

Prompt: “Create a 30-day plan for developing this high-income skill [name the skill], broken into weekly focus areas. Include what I should practice, build, and apply each week, and how I might begin demonstrating this skill publicly by the end of the month.”

The plan ChatGPT generates will need to be adjusted. Real schedules are messier than 30-day frameworks.

What ChatGPT Can And Cannot Do Here

ChatGPT does not know your local job market. It does not know your specific industry’s hiring patterns or what a particular employer in your city is willing to pay. For high-stakes decisions — a career pivot, a major upskilling investment — the prompts above are a starting point, not a substitute for talking to people actually working in those fields.

What ChatGPT can do is identify patterns, name strengths, connect them to opportunities, and build a plan that would otherwise take weeks of scattered reflection.

The WEF’s data on skills makes one thing clear: the gap between people who understand which skills the market wants and those who are building them is already widening. By 2030, 63% of employers project they will have trouble finding workers with the skills they need.

The people who close that gap early will not necessarily be the most credentialed. They will be the ones who figured out which skills to develop and then took action.
